Robots as a teaching tool in schools
Students from thirty classes in the Greater Quebec City area will participate in a pilot project on computer programming. By the end of the school year, Quebec plans to introduce 300 robots to elementary and secondary schools.
The Robot 360 project aims to experiment with computer programming as a teaching tool in primary cycle 3 and lower secondary classes.
“Computer language will be part of the future of our young people. Programming must be part of the children’s curriculum. How? That’s what we will determine, “says Quebec Education Minister Sébastien Proulx.
The minister is also looking for 29 teachers in the Chaudière-Appalaches and Capitale-Nationale regions to set up the program.
Training
In the spring of 2018, the selected candidates will participate in two days of training at Laval University in order to learn programming and robotics techniques.
Teachers will then be accompanied in class by a pedagogical advisor to integrate the use of robots into their lesson plans.
That’s not all about bringing robots to schools. It takes training for teachers. This is often what may have been missing in the past.

The pilot project is being rolled out under the Digital Action Plan for Education and Higher Education.
The government wants to intensify the digital transformation of the Québec education system and develop digital skills among young people.
$60 million for renovation projects
Quebec also announced Monday $ 60 million for the completion of 121 renovation projects in the Capitale-Nationale region.
The Commission scolaire de la Capitale gets $ 37 million, while the First Seigneuries raises nearly $10 million.
The remainder of the financial assistance is distributed to the Discoverers’ school boards ($ 5.8 million), Charlevoix ($ 3.7 million), Portneuf ($2 million) and Central Quebec ($0.4 million).
In total, $ 740 million will be invested in renovating schools across the province.
