US agribusiness multinational Campbell will shut down its Toronto manufacturing facility beginning in 2019.
Significant productivity improvements and lower canned soup sales in North America would explain the company’s decision.
Canadian soup and broth production will be integrated into its US manufacturing network in Maxton, North Carolina, Napoleon, Ohio and Paris, Texas. Nearly 380 jobs will be affected by the closure of the Toronto plant.
“After a thorough review, we decided it was the best course of action for our company. This decision does not reflect the talent or dedication of our team at our Toronto facility and we are committed to helping our employees make this difficult transition, “said Mark Alexander, President of Americas Simple Meals and Beverages, the parent company. from Campbell.
The company plans to operate the Toronto plant for up to 18 months and will close it gradually. The multinational will offer workers severance benefits and career guidance services.
Opened in 1931, the Toronto plant can not be redeveloped to become competitive, says Mark Alexander, because of its age and size.
Campbell also announced that it will move its Canadian headquarters and business operations to new Toronto-area locations in the coming months.
