Beginning Monday, ferry passengers at BC Ferries will no longer be allowed to smoke on board the boats. The smoking ban comes into effect for all boats and stations at BC Ferries and also includes electronic cigarettes and marijuana.
“It may be difficult for some clients and employees, but 85% of British Columbians do not smoke, and these customers are asking us to create a smoke-free environment,” said BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.
BC Ferries imposed a ban on smoking inside boats in 1990.
In 2016, the provincial government has increased the perimeter from 3 to 6 meters where it is forbidden to smoke around the entrances and windows of a public place.
According to Marshall, several ferries are not big enough to allow passengers to smoke within 6 meters of the entrances.
No punishment
There is no plan in place to impose sanctions or fines on those who do not comply with the ban.
“It will be an educational process,” says Marshall. Our staff will inform those who smoke that it is a smoke-free environment and we ask that this regulation be respected by our customers. ”
Tobacco weaning aids will be sold on board by BC Ferries.
