Physicists are able to understand only 4% of the universe’s composition, which means that the rest is completely unknown. This mysterious undiscovered part of the universe is known as dark matter.
What is dark matter
The unseen substance in space known as dark matter was first given this name back in 1977. So far, not much was accomplished to prove the existence of this matter, leaving it to the stage of just a theory. Proving that this force truly exists could significantly change the way we perceive the universe.
A new project may uncover this mysterious matter
Scientists are planning to start using a machine known as Padme, which stands for Positron Annihilation into Dark Matter Experiment, in order to search for some of the enigmatic substances that comprise the universe. This new instrument is located at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, close to Rome.
With this new project, scientists are hoping to “catch” some evidence that could prove the existence of dark matter, even though they have mentioned that the chances of actually discovering something are not that big. Nevertheless, proving this long-debated theory would have incredibly huge implications in understanding the universe.
Searching for the unseen
According to Bryan McKinnon, who is a research fellow at the Glasgow University, also in search for this dark photon (the particle the scientists are hoping to discover), mentioned that if it is real, this particle would, in fact, be a portal. This is the reason why the existence of such particle could completely change our perception of the universe.
McKinnon believes that if dark photons really exist, then they will allow us to take a look “into the dark sector” – into the unknown. What will come out of it is yet to be unveiled.
