If you love going to the restaurant or a fast food, then the recent bans in Canada will probably disappoint your taste buds. The recent ban on trans fats announced by the Minister of Health, Ginette Petitpas Taylor is also being followed as of 17 September by another ban of the partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) to food.
According to Advocator, cutting junk food which contains fat, saturated fat, a lot of sugar or salt from the diet would reduce by 11% the risk of developing cancer.
Moreover, Taylor stated recently that:
“As Minister of Health, I am very concerned with the rise in heart disease, which is one of the leading causes of death in Canada. Health Canada’s ban on partially hydrogenated oils in the food supply is part of the Government of Canada’s action to help protect Canadians from diet-related chronic disease.”
PHOs started being used at the beginning of the 20th century to make food last longer. They are also one of the many contributors to heart disease. At the moment, there is a global effort to stop the use of industrial fats in food, meaning all artificial trans fats and PHOs are going to be banned.
“Heart-clogging Fats” Finally Banned
The Health Canada ban includes PHOs and trans fats in the recent ban to help Canadians choose healthier food, explains the federal government in a press release.
Yves Savoie, who is the CEO of Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada stated:
“This important and final step will eliminate these heart-clogging fats from our food supply, benefiting the health of all people in Canada by reducing the number of heart attacks and saving lives. This measure is a critical component of the federal Healthy Eating Strategy.”
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will phase out the use of PHOs and trans fats in two years, but products that contain PHOs can be sold if they were manufactured before 18 September 2018.
Beginning on 25 September, Canadians won’t find food with trans-fat in restaurants or grocery stores.
