It’s been half a century since Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin landed on the surface of the moon with the help of the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle. The historic event took place on July 20, 1969.
NASA has set its sight on a bigger target as it plans to send a crewed mission to the Red Planet by 2033. The initiative underwent massive critic form independent experts who argued that the deadline is unfeasible, but NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine is confident that there are a lot of opportunities which can contribute to the success of the mission.
During a recent testimony to the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation Bridenstine argued that there are select technologies which could be explored and developed as the agency plans to accelerate the progress rate of the project. The 2033 target remains the ideal one, but Bridenstine mentioned that the discovery and use of new technologies could play an essential role in accelerating the timeline.
NASA Aims To Fly Humans To Mars By 2033
Donald Trump highlighted the achievements of the Apollo 11 in the speech which marked the Independence Day anniversary, promising that the US will plant its flag on the surface of Mars after a crewed mission to the Moon, which should take place in the next five years. The Artemis initiative plays a critical role for a large number of future projects, including the Space Launch System.
The SLS was built as a heavy-duty rocket which may be used during the upcoming missions. It is thought that an essential outpost could be established on the surface of our natural satellite, allowing astronaut crews to mine water ice which could be consumed and the manufacturing of rocket propellant by breaking the same water into its essential components.
If the launch would take place when a favorable trajectory is available, a crewed team could reach Mars in less than one year. It remains to be seen if NASA manages to land on the Moon by 2024.
