COVID-19 has a long list of symptoms, and many of them are making the disease easy mistakable with the flu: cough, headaches, fever, joint and muscle pain, and fatigue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently added new symptoms caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and they include manifestations like heart problems, depression, brain fog, chest pain, and more.
But you still need to know that one certain indicator that you’re infected with COVID-19, as the disease could become very tricky even in its mild forms. However, running a test as soon as you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above is not a bad idea.
Anosmia is the main indicator of COVID-19 infection
Thanks to a recent analysis of studies, it was found that 77% of patients infected with COVID-19 reported anosmia (the scientific term for loss of smell) as among the earliest symptoms of the disease.
Leo Nissola (MD) declared:
We have been researching this data for less than a year. Still, so far, it suggests that the primary attack of the coronavirus is in the nose, in the nasal epithelium, which is the skinlike layer of cells in charge of expressing odors,
It seems like the virus assaults support cells and stem cells in the nose, but not neurons directly, which does not mean that neurons cannot be affected.
The same doctor explains that the aforementioned cells are able to maintain the balance and also trigger the signal towards the brain. The balance is disrupted for some patients when COVID-19 infection kicks in. Therefore, neuronal signalling is shut down, which also turns off the smell.
In the end, using the basic safety measures against the pandemic virus remains a good choice: wearing a mask, keeping a distance of two meters from the others, and frequently washing the hands.
