During NASA’s Voyager space missions, we’ve seen some incredible sights. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are finally reaching the finish of their transmission back to Earth, which has taken 45 years to complete. It will be heartbreaking to see the Voyager mission come to a close after so many years of exploration.
During the last 45 years, we’ve seen tremendous development in our efforts to explore space. With the landing of astronauts on the Moon, we’ve gained unprecedented insight into our solar system. Two retired space missions have been at the core of a slew of recent findings. A four-year mission will be carried out by two separate probes. A journey that has now lasted more than 40 years.
An impressive legacy
The Voyager space probes have made history for 45 years, despite their launch in 1977. Scientists on Earth get transmissions from Voyager 2 18 hours after they leave the spacecraft, whereas scientists on Voyager 1 receive them 22 hours after they leave. Away from our solar system, the two spacecraft are presently hurling through interstellar space.
And now, after all that hard work, it’s finally over. Even though they’re still speeding into interstellar space, the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft are starting to lose power. Saying farewell to 45-year-old spacecraft may not seem like a huge issue now that NASA is preparing human Mars missions. Nonetheless, the Voyager space probes are much more than simply a satellite that has to be decommissioned. They have a long history of exploration. Those who have come before them are pioneers in their field.
For at least another decade, NASA plans to keep the spacecraft. Even after they’ve transmitted their last message back to Earth, they’ll continue to drift in space. Long after the death of our Sun. One can only hope that these messages will be discovered one day by someone who will be able to see the optimism and tenacity that drove mankind to aim for the heavens.
