Artificial intelligence can be impactful for astronomy in a number of ways. For example, it can be used to analyze large amounts of data from telescopes and other instruments, helping astronomers to discover new objects and phenomena. AI can also be used to identify patterns and anomalies in data that may not be immediately obvious to human researchers.
Additionally, AI can be used to control telescopes and other instruments, making them more efficient and allowing for more observations to be made. Let’s not also forget that AI can be used to simulate the behavior of astronomical systems, helping to test theories and make predictions about the universe.
Can AI be impactful for Moon exploration as well?
A cutting-edge AI system from Canada is making history by embarking on a journey to the lunar surface, riding along on the United Arab Emirates’ Rashid rover, which was launched by SpaceX a few months ago, and Space.com tells us more. This will be the first time an AI system will venture beyond low Earth orbit, and it has the potential to revolutionize decision-making for spacecraft, including NASA’s Artemis missions to search for water on the Moon and improve Earth observations.
As the rover touches down on the Moon in the spring, it will be in search of valuable minerals and other items of interest. This demonstration mission may be short-lived on the lunar surface, but the data and insights gathered will be invaluable.
Several rovers have been sent to the Moon. Here is a list of some of the most notable ones:
- Luna 2 (USSR) – The first spacecraft to reach the surface of the Moon, launched in 1959.
- Luna 9 (USSR) – The first spacecraft to make a soft landing on the Moon and transmit data back to Earth, launched in 1966.
- Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle (United States) – Four of these vehicles were used during the Apollo missions (15, 16, and 17) between 1971 and 1972.
- Lunokhod 1 and 2 (USSR) – Two rovers were sent to the Moon as part of the Luna 17 and Luna 21 missions in 1970 and 1973, respectively.
- Yutu (China) – The first lunar rover to land on the Moon’s surface in more than 40 years as part of the Chang’e 3 mission in 2013.
- Pragyan (India) – A lunar rover sent to the Moon as part of the Chandrayaan-2 mission in 2019.
It’s worth noting that there have been several other lunar rovers that have been proposed and some are in development but have not yet been sent to the Moon.
