Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia caused by brain cell death. Alzheimer’s is quite a common disease that appears later in life. According to a study published in Neurology, a certain diet could reduce the risk of this disease. Read below for more details.
Based on the published study, a rich diet in fruit, vegetables, and tea are the key to reduce the development of Alzheimer’s. In other words, eating foods containing antioxidant flavonoids. What are flavonoids? Flavonoids are found in almost all vegetables and fruits, as well as in the tea. They are also a type of flavonoid, a chemical composition part of the plant pigments that are known to be beneficial for our health.
According to the study, a rich diet on flavonoids will lower your chance of developing Alzheimer’s with 48 percent. The most recommended sources of flavonols are pears, olive oil, kale, beans, tea, spinach, broccoli, wine, tomatoes, and apples.
Alzheimer’s Disease Could Be Tackled With A Specific Diet
The study consists of the data from 921 people with an average age of 81 who did not suffer from Alzheimer’s at the beginning of the research. Researchers have followed the participants for about six years. The data collected from the participants consist of their diet, education level, amount of physical activity, and intellectual activity, such as reading and playing games.
At the end of the study, 220 people developed Alzheimer’s.”More research is needed to confirm these results, but these are promising findings,” said study author Dr. Thomas Holland at Rush University in Chicago, US. “Eating more fruits and vegetables and drinking more tea could be a fairly inexpensive and easy way for people to help stave off Alzheimer’s dementia.”
“With the elderly population increasing worldwide, any decrease in the number of people with this devastating disease, or even delaying it for a few years, could have an enormous benefit on public health.”
