Today is the day when we say our last goodbyes to Dumbledore. Actor Michael Gambon, who was best remembered for his role as Albus Dumbledore in the highly acclaimed and beloved Harry Potter film series, passed away at the age of 82. Although this is a regrettable event, the memories of Gambon’s performance as Dumbledore will live on forever.
We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of Pneumonia, read a statement from his publicist.
Gambon began his career as an actor on stage and was recruited by Laurence Olivier to take part in the inaugural performance of the National Theatre Hamlet. He was nominated for and received a number of prizes, including three Olivier prizes, for his work on stage. How incredibly motivational!
After actor Richard Harris passed away, Michael Gambon stepped in to continue playing the character of Albus Dumbledore. Even though he was a fan of Rowling’s books, the author’s work wasn’t strictly at the top of his acting priority list. The manner in which the actor gave that glitter to the persona that we all adore so much is what will remain most memorable about the performance. When we think about it, he really brought a distinct tone to the part, one that was very different from how the character was portrayed in the original books. Back in 2009, the actor gave an interview to The LA Times in which he stated that because he had to cope with the screenwriter’s words, he felt “no point in reading the books.”
In addition to playing Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series, he was a talented actor who appeared in a variety of film and television roles, including those in Hail, Caesar!, Paddington, and the incredible BBC’s adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s book The Casual Vacancy.
