Russia’s Moon Mission Luna-25 Fails by Crashing Into Lunar Surface
Before attempting a descent, the Luna-25, the first Russian lunar spacecraft in nearly half a century, was unable to reach the Moon’s pre-landing orbit as intended. The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, launched the spacecraft the previous week, placing it in direct tough competition with NASA and other space agencies. According to previous Roscosmos statements, it was expected to land on the south pole of the Moon on August 21. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen after all.

The recent spacecraft became Luna 25 to emphasize the continuance of the Soviet Luna mission from the 1970s, but it is still a part of the Luna-Glob lunar research program.
According to a statement issued by the Russian space agency Roscosmos, the emergency situation that blocked the procedure from succeeding prevented the robotic spacecraft from entering orbit on Saturday as scheduled. The group is reportedly running a review into the matter, but no additional details have been provided so far.
The Russian space agency has got everything in order to launch Luna 25, the first lunar probe, to the Moon. If it were to have been successful, it would be considered the first spacecraft to reach the South Pole of the Moon. There is intense competition among spacefaring nations, notably the United States and China, to lay claim to the south pole of the Moon. And talking about India’s lunar mission, in fact, the Chandrayaan-3 probe is currently orbiting the Moon and is slated to attempt a landing near the Moon’s pole this week. Quite impressive, isn’t it?!
Going back to the Russian mission, it actually achieved lunar orbit on the 16th of August, 2023, after being launched on a Soyuz-2 rocket on the 10th of August, 2023. The spacecraft was scheduled to impact the Moon on August 21. Sadly, nothing of the sort materialized. In the meantime, as the Russian space agency decides what comes next, additional information about the Luna-25 lander will be made available, and we could hope for the best to happen.
