As it becomes more and more advertised as a healthy choice, coconut oil significantly grew in popularity lately. Many said that the benefits this oil has on human health are numerous, but latest studies revealed that saturated fatty acids in this oil are harmful. Now, a Harvard professor claimed that coconut oil is “pure poison.”
Dr. Karin Michels, who is a professor at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and the director of the Institute for Prevention and Tumour Epidemiology at the University of Freiburg, claimed that coconut oil is “one of the worst foods you can eat” and that it is “pure poison.” All that because it is made of saturated fatty acids.
Saturated fatty acids increase the risks of cardiovascular diseases
Contradicting the widely-spread belief that coconut oil is a “superfood” with a whole bunch of health benefits, recent studies revealed that it is mostly made of saturated fats which are known to be harmful to human health.
With that in mind, the American Heart Association officials advised people not to consume saturated fatty acids, found in foods such as processed meat and coconut oil, among others, to reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases.
The experts say saturated fats can boost the risk of developing coronary heart disease as they are increasing the bad cholesterol levels in the blood.
Harvard professor claimed that coconut oil is “pure poison”
During a speech at the University of Freiburg entitled Coconut Oil and other Nutritional Errors, Dr. Karin Michels, a professor at Harvard, claimed that coconut oil is “one of the worst foods you can eat,” describing it as “pure poison.” According to Dr. Karin Michels, coconut oil consumption is more damaging than lard because coconut oil contains saturated fatty acids in enormous amounts.
However, even though Dr. Michels thinks that coconut oil should be avoided at all costs, the health authorities’ recommendations regarding saturated fatty acids consumption are not as direct.
