Devastating news hit the internet on 14th of September 2018, and it simply shook the patients using Valsartan. Valsartan is a brand of recalled heart failure and blood pressure medicine which apparently includes an impurity, a second contaminant which might cause cancer.

What was discovered and how

The Food and Drug Administration made an announcement which said that three lots of valsartan drugs from Torrent Pharmaceuticals contain a chemical which causes cancer in animals and is also thought to be a human carcinogen, NDEA.

The recall list for August includes these valsartan products as well because they might be contaminated with one more impurity known for causing cancer, the NDMA.

Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals from China discovered that NDEA is present in quite a worrying number of valsartan ingredients, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Warning

If you are a patient who suffers from either heart failure or high blood pressure and was prescribed this valsartan drug, you are adviced by Food and Drug Administration to keep taking your medication until you can address the problem to your pharmacist or doctor. According to the agency, even though your medication can be found on the list of recalled meds, you must not stop using them and search for possible alternatives with your doctor.

Keep in mind that the fact that these impurities might cause cancer to humans is not confirmed yet and it is better to keep treating the disease you have with these medications instead of stop using them and risk to aggravate it.

Please contact your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible and only listen to their advice.

Further information regarding this subject will be provided as soon as more becomes public.

Do not stop the medication process.
