Artificial Intelligence Can Help Doctors Make Better Decisions

Artificial intelligence systems have considerably evolved in recent years, and deep learning machines can help doctors make better decisions. Professor Rishi Rawat has one student – an artificial intelligence system. Rawat’s purpose is to teach the computer about cancer and its detection methods by feeding the machine samples of cancer cells.

Professor Rawat is teaching the deep learning machine at a lab at the University of Southern California’s (USC) Clinical Science Center in Los Angeles. The final goal of his task would be to create an AI system capable of helping human doctors make better decisions regarding cancer diagnostic, among other things.

“They’re like a computer brain, and you can put the data into them, and they will learn the patterns and the pattern recognition that’s important to making decisions,” said Dr. Rishi Rawat.

The artificial intelligence system like that one taught by Rawat would be indispensable for doctors worldwide, as they would be able to comprehend biology and diagnose disease in ways that could not be possible for humans.

“Machines are not going to take the place of doctors. Computers will not treat patients, but they will help make certain decisions and look for things that the human brain can’t recognize these patterns by itself,” also said David Agus, USC’s professor of medicine and biomedical engineering.

Rawat’s mission is to feed the machine learning system with cancer cells samples to make help the AI learn how to identify sophisticated patterns within the cells and precisely spot specific types of breast cancer tumors better than pathologists.

“What the pathologist has to do is to count what percentage of the cells are brown and what percentage are not. Are they disordered? Are they in a regular spacing? What’s going on exactly with the arrangement of the cells in the tissue. We could do this instantaneously for almost no cost in the developing world,” explained Dan Ruderman from the USC, referring to the use of an artificial intelligence system in helping doctors make better decisions.
