The discoveries scientists make represents the beauty of science and technology every time. So is the case of Messier 98, discovered in 1781 by the French astronomer Pierre Mechain. Messier 98 is a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Coma Berenices, and it’s 54 million light years away from our planet. Its name is coming from Carles Messier, a colleague of Pierre Mechain, who cataloged it in the Catalogue des Nebuleuses & des amas d’Etoiles in the same year. NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope studied this galaxy and is now showing the depths of Messier 98.
As we mentioned above, the spiral galaxy was discovered in 1781 by Pierre Mechain, it’s also called M98, LEDA 39028, UGC 7231, or NGC 4192, and it has 6 ° to the East of the star Denebola. The spiral galaxy is displaying mixed barred, and no blocked features, with no rings and tightly wound arms. It has an inclination angle of 74 °, and its maximum rotation velocity is 236 km/s.

The scientists discovered that the combined mass of the stars in the M98 galaxy is estimated at 76 billion times the mass of the Sun. Besides this, M98 contains around 4.3 billion solar masses of neutral hydrogen, an active nucleus, and 85 million solar masses in the dust. Scientists say that the spiral galaxy is showing the properties of a LINER type galaxy combined with an H II region.
Also, Messier 98 is a part of the Virgo Cluster, which is composed of a large, nearby cluster of galaxies, between 1.300 and 2.000. An interesting fact is that Messier 98 spiral galaxy interacted with Messier 99, about 750 million years ago, and now they are separated by a vast distance of 1.300.000 light years. Finally, M98 is approaching us with 125 km/s, has a blue shift, and the abundance of star-forming materials produces stellar newborns, thanks to the full of cosmic dust.
