RSV Cases Have the Potential to Increase, Warns CDC

The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) represents a virus that infects the lower lungs. Recent studies have shown that this illness causes hospitalization in a projected 60,000 to 160,000 adults each year. Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States are issuing a warning to medical professionals that the number of reported cases of RSV is increasing in the Southeast. This regional increase may be indicative of a rise in the number of reported cases across the rest of the United States over the next two to three months. This illness is also the most common reason for newborns to be hospitalized in the United States when they are just under the age of one year old. That’s completely tragic.

Historically, such regional increases have predicted the beginning of RSV season nationally, with increased RSV activity spreading north and west over the following 2–3 months, explained the CDC Health Alert Network advisory.

The organization has stated that it is pushing medical professionals to provide new vaccines as quickly as they become available for newborns as well as individuals over the age of 60. According to the announcement, this autumn will also see the introduction of a new vaccination designed specifically for infants and young children. Medical professionals are also urged to prepare ready to administer the injection, which is a novel monoclonal antibody that goes by the name Beyfortus, as soon as it is made accessible at the beginning of October.

Moreover, based on more data from the CDC, the prevalence of RSV in the South began to increase toward the end of July, and while it has nearly doubled over the last month, it is still nowhere near its highest level from the previous season. Many medical professionals report that the RSV outbreak in the United States back in 2017 was one of the worst they can remember. Those who are already dealing with a preexisting medical problem, those who are expecting a child, and those who are either very young or very elderly are at the highest risk. So, please take care of yourself and go see a doctor as soon as something about your health concerns you.
