Caltech Scientists Create a Mars Map of 5.7 Terapixels

We hate to say it, but all those smart guys from NASA still have a lot of work to do to figure out how exactly they will send the first humans to Mars. It’s clearly a much more difficult mission than how the script of “The Martian” movie shows. A huge amount of information is still needed for astronomers and astrophysicists to fully understand how humans could behave on the Red Planet.

But while sending people to Mars is still difficult, that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible for scientists to map the entire surface of our neighboring planet. They’ve just proven that it’s indeed possible through the new Global CTX Mosaic of Mars that each and every person can use as long as they are connected to the internet!

It doesn’t matter, even if you never had anything to do with astronomy. It doesn’t matter if you’re an astronomer, a doctor, a teacher, or a cleaning lady. Anybody can use the map of Mars that was created by Caltech scientists, and that reaches 5.7 terapixels.

Jay Dickson, who is the leader of the project and also the image processing scientist, explained, as SciTechDaily quotes:

I wanted something that would be accessible to everyone,

Schoolchildren can use this now. My mother, who just turned 78, can use this now. The goal is to lower the barriers for people who are interested in exploring Mars.

In order for NASA to reach Mars, it first needs to see if everything will go according to the plan with its Artemis mission that’s scheduled to launch next year. This mission mainly implies the exploration of our Moon and the return of human astronauts to the surface of our natural satellite after more than 50 years.

NASA plans to send humans to Mars by the end of the current decade, and SpaceX officials are also optimistic that the goal is feasible.
